PLASTIC BOTTLES DON’T GO WASTE

Gone are the days when used plastic bottles become crowded in our environment displaying all over the street. Plastic bottles have now become productive in the society we are living in. It has changed the way people react to used plastic bottles.

People now collect these waste bottles, gather them and sell them to the plastic waste department for money while others store liquids in them. The collected waste is now used as recycling for other items and as well as the same item.

These junk plastic bottles come from Companies that normally produce water and beverages. Companies like Voltic (GH) Ltd, Blowchem Industries Limited, manufacturers of Bel-aqua and bel beverages, Twellium Industrial Company who also produces Verna mineral water, rush energy drink, planet drinks, etc.

Waste plastic bottles become very useful for recycling of items such as clothes, furniture, fences, bags, containers and even produce new plastic bottles. All these items are very necessary for humans. Recycling these plastic bottles will limit the amount of trash that surrounds the environment to the extent of avoiding chemicals that can make people, plants, and animals soak.

These same junk plastic bottles can even be used for garden decorations and actually create jobs for the jobless in the market.
With the help of these companies who produces these bottles, market women have transformed into a different way of selling their palm oil, cooking oil, parazone, liquid soap, after wash, and other sellers who normally use these waste bottles.

The 350ml of a used plastic bottle filled with palm oil may cost ¢4.00 whiles the 500ml costs ¢5.00, the 750ml also cost ¢8.00, and the 1litre may cost ¢20.00. Again, for the cooking oil, 350ml of used plastic bottle cost ¢5.00, the 500ml cost ¢7.00, the 750ml cost ¢10.00, and the 1-liter cost ¢20.00.

When you take the 350ml of parazone (bleaching detergents) and liquid soap filled in the used plastic bottles cost ¢1.00, the 500ml of the bottle cost ¢2.00, the 750ml of the bottle cost 3.00 whiles the 1-liter cost ¢5.00.

There are many uses of these junk bottles that helps traders to sell their product. Whilst vendors are using it to store their liquids that are needful to consumers, others also gather these plastic waste to the plastic waste department for money.

It is not like plastic waste is no more scattered on our streets and gutters but it has decreased as compared to the previous days where it will be displayed all around. It has now become useful to people and also to companies who collect them for recycling.

For traders, they believe that using those bottles to load cooking oil, liquid soap, park zone, and other liquids gives them accurate measurements of the item they sell, however, they don’t run at a loss, and also as compared to the rubber part can get torn anytime in which they mostly run at a loss.

Hmmm, everything comes with its negative and positive side. Whiles traders think is a good idea for them, consumers are also complaining about the hygienic nature of the used plastic bottles.

“They should rather sell the appropriate ones rather than using those bottles. They have the sealed ones from companies and I think those are hygienic than the used ones”, one customer added. The other continued that, “depending on the hygienic content associated with it. If they do it in a hygienic way then fine, if not then I think it’s harmful to us”.

“Market women even though not all refuse to wash the bottles well, therefore, they can be dangerous to one’s health since no one knows where these junk bottles are picked from, one customer complained.

Therefore, I’m urging all sellers to take the plastic bottle into hygienic conditions so that liquids stored in it will be uninfected and that will be good for human consumption.

Also, people who throw these plastic waste bottles around must learn to gather them and use them for important things (decoration, storing of items) to the extent of selling them to agents of the Plastic Waste Department for money. All these activities will help maintain a good environment.
