The Greater Accra Regional Minister Henry Quartey has stated that there will be a ban on ‘Aboboyaa’ taking effect on the 1st November 2021. He said this during an interview on Asaase Fm on Friday, October 22, 2021.
According to him, the action will help revitalize and ensure strict compliance and enforcing road traffic regulations (2012) (L12180), for motorbikes and tricycles (Aboboyaa) from using the highways and the principal streets in the Greater Accra Region.
“So effective 1st November, tricycles cannot and will not be allowed to ride on the motorway, so after the days, they will be restricted to their respective assemblies rather than on their principal streets…effective 1st November as for the Tema Motorway they cannot ride on it, they can continue their business in other areas,” said the Greater Accra Regional Minister.
He added that “in collaboration with assemblies along the stretch of the motorway, that will be announced, we will give them one week grace period”
He further added that this decision is part of the “let’s make Accra work Agenda”.
Some Ghanaians have expressed divergent views on the impending government policy.
Dr. Eugene Ofe (medical Doctor at Lekma hospital) described the act as “ 50/50″ in the sense that ‘our roads are not made for tricycles. Also, these tricycles don’t have good driving mirrors so you realize the riders keep turning their heads while riding. On the other hand, we can’t downplay the economic impact of these tricycles, it’s made business move faster and improved economic activities”
Rita Bosompem on the other hand said, ” If there is a ban on ‘aboboyaa’ there will be a lack of employment since that is the only source of income for some people and now there is no job in the country.”
Another resident expressed his view saying that” the ban on ‘aboboyaa’ will affect others because it helps in fast distribution of items.
Due to the issue of traffic, some traders prefer the use of the aboboyaa for easy delivery of items and also saves time.” He added.
Mr. Kofi Asante ‘aboboyaa’ rider also said, ” The ban on ‘aboboyaa’ is not a good initiative because the government has not provided any work for the youth and of the most graduates, therefore if the government provides jobs for the youth we will stop the use of ‘aboboyaa’ which is our source of income.”
“Placing a ban on ‘aboboyaa’ is a good suggestion because it causes traffic and even accidents. Also, we have waste management compan like zoomlion and they are efficient in managing their works well.” Another resident explained.
